Ruby Unit July 2018

Each month, we’ve been keeping you up to date with changes at Adelaide Women’s Prison, and bringing you messages from some of the women in the newest part of the prison, the Ruby Unit. The way the prison operates seems to be changing really quickly at the moment, and we’ll keep you posted. For now, here are some of the thoughts of the women who were living in Ruby unit a few weeks ago.


Sex Industry Network



Right now there’s a shift in support towards decriminalising sex work in south Australia, with a motion moved in parliament and the attorney general pledging her support when the bill comes to the upper house.

As an issue effecting so many women in prison around the world, we turned to our sisters at the Adelaide based Sex Industry Network to find out more …

User Voice and Mark Johnson


Mark Johnson is the founder of User Voice, a prisoner-led social justice organisation from the UK. He was a keynote speaker at the 2018 Reintegration Puzzle conference, held in Hobart, Australia this June.

Linda and Fiona had a chat with Mark at the conference. Here’s part one, where Mark shares his life story and how it led him to establish the organisation.
